LexisNexis opens customer innovation lab driven by AI to change the future of legal work

LexisNexis opens customer innovation lab driven by AI to change the future of legal work

LexisNexis Legal & Professional, a division of RELX plc, today announced the opening of its Customer Innovation Lab in New York City, which will deliver a new model for how legal artificial intelligence gets built.
The company said the shift is designed to bring AI directly into the grasp of legal professionals. Instead of building AI solutions and then dropping them in the customer’s lap for feedback, the lab will bring legal workers, LexisNexis engineers, and AI technology together in a collaboration.
LexisNexis framed this not as “vibe consulting,” but as augmenting customer discovery and development with access to artificial intelligence and professional expertise. The human- and customer-centric approach is designed to bring real solutions together that can quickly turn into tested prototypes in hours or days and production-ready software within weeks.
“Our vision is to empower customers with world-leading, purpose-built and trusted legal AI,” said Chief Technology Officer Greg Dickason. “The Customer Innovation Lab changes who’s in the room when legal AI gets built. Customers help originate and shape what we build from day one.”
The lab brings together legal professionals from law firms, corporate legal departments, judiciary and academia to speak to pain points and challenges within legal practice. Engineers then work with them to build AI solutions in real time. The prototypes are then designed and tested the same day against the real-world problems they were built to solve, bringing results and working models to legal professionals to identify seams and issues.
Projects only advance when a solution displays proven quality, accuracy and security alongside immediate customer feedback, iterating on actual needs.
According to Thomson Reuters, lawyers spend around 40% to 60% of their time drafting and reviewing documents; LexisNexis said it has independently verified this pattern with customers who told the company the complex nature of legal work dominates legal drafting, falling into personalization, tonality, strategic understanding and subject matter expertise. The paperwork is eating the work with paper.
LexusNexis said the Lab is building and prototyping AI and agentic drafting to help adapt a firm or organization’s drafting style, precedents and playbooks into one place. The same solutions assist with risk flagging and redline suggestions using a customer’s own standards, allowing them to carry context across vast related document sets using document-aware editing tools designed to work within a specific legal expertise.
Technology collaborators, including OpenAI Group PBC and Amazon Web Services Inc., have participated alongside customers and LexisNexis teams.
The company said the Lab is already shipping solutions developed from customer ideation and engineering expertise. Solutions include LexisNexis-developed legal AI models, purpose-built for legal work using authoritative legal content; an advanced customer-managed Protégé Vault, which allows customers to securely store and analyze documents, videos, images, audio files and other material together within the legal process; and Secure Protégé Workrooms, which provides a space for team collaboration augmented with AI assistants built with carefully curated permissions and access controls.
