For more than a decade, middle management offered one of the tech sector’s most reliable career paths. Under pressure to cut costs and flatten hierarchies, tech firms are integrating artificial intelligence directly into daily software development and team workflows. In the process, the structural buffer long provided by middle management is shrinking. Companies are systematically stripping out middle layers, broadening spans of control, and replacing manual check-ins with automated tracking systems.Historically, middle managers held authority because they controlled the flow of information.
