AI is often discussed as if it were completely unprecedented. This is not the case. When compared with previous transformations — industrialisation, electrification, printing, globalisation, public health and the digital revolution — familiar patterns begin to appear: • massive upfront investment • early disruption before long-term benefit • infrastructure built at enormous cost • pioneers who may not capture the value they create • labour displacement and reorganisation • productivity gains that arrive later than expected • wealth concentrating around those who control the scarce complements The key question is not simply whether AI will be useful.
